Do markets truly go up over time?
Do human lives truly improve over time?
In reference to the market question, one might say yes. Especially right now, the amount of dollars thrown into the stock market is artificially propping it up to look impressive. More dollars make it seem like there is more value, when in reality, lots is coming out of thin air.
In the long term, Isuppose, one could say that markets only go up overall. But there’s no telling that an individual stock will only go up, or that we aren’t at the height of a run. We’ve had plenty of “lost decades” where after a boom, there’s a decade-ish period of stagnation, or at least no clear upward growth.
More dollars inflating the economy does not necessarily mean more health in the economy. The stock market itself isn’t even reflecting the entirety of the economy, as it focuses more on the health of corporations or distinct market sectors.
Similarly, on a more basic level, more things available to overstimulate a human life doesn’t necessarily improve that a human life. And context for more obvious abundance doesn’t always equate into a more preferable experience.
